I had TRW and replaced with same. Quite a lot of info is out there if you do a few searches. If in doubt just get your mechanic to do the job, then it's up to him to buy a rack and if it doesn't fit he'll have to get the right one at no extra cost to you.

Could you perhaps point me in the direction where you found the information about the racks being interchangeable? because with all the info ive found (and ive done endless searches over the last year) it seems that they probably arent.
My mechanic is family so I get cheap labour when he can fit me around his work and I normally source the parts myself. The point is ive got an S70 sitting there with an extremely good volvo steering rack but all info points to it being a TRW rack (even if the code doesnt make sense). I really dont want to go to the trouble of getting both racks off to find they arent interchangeable, cheers |

looked at so much info when changing mine over that I really can't remember where I read it. Could have been this site, volvo speed, mathews volvo site, swede speed, bay13, etc etc
As far as I remember the rack ends are not interchangeable between smi/trw but the rack fits the subframe in the exact same way, a car with a trw doesn't have a different sub frame with different mount points for the rack, so smi made a rack to fit the volvo as did trw, the car isn't made to fit a different rack. four bolts drop through the frame, one bolt into the engine pad mount, if you can get under your s70 you could compare the two racks you have there. |

Just to conclude this post, I ended up buying a used rack from an online scrapyard, it was from a car the same age and model which had only done 52k.
Cost 60 quid delivered and my mechanic charged 40 quid to fit, only took a couple of hours on the ramps. So do not despair if your rack goes pear shaped! 'new' rack has been on for nearly 6 months and has been perfect. Thank you everyone for their input.... Now to sort that ABS.. ha ha! |

Another option for the ABS is to fit a time delay relay in line with the violet wire going to connector B Pin 6 of the dash instrument cluster, set the timer to about 5 seconds and configure it for Delay ON function, wire the coil of the timer to the ignition switch. I have used These in the past.
This will make the ABS light work correctly (as far as the MoT tester is concerned) then get the car fixed up later on - Mike |
