Thanks Jack. It sounds like the sort of job I'd have done blindfold once upon a time, but I think I'll let the experts do this one!

Well, the sun came out for an hour or two this morning, so I thought I'd have a go at this problem again.
However, my bright little lady, worried about my back, checked our RAC cover, and lo and behold, we have home start!
A phone call, and two hours later here comes the big orange van, with very cheery, happy-go-lucky fixer.
He put his big jump leads on, churned the starter for about five minutes, and away she went! He let it run for a few minutes, convinced that I'd flooded it,( although I hadn't touched it for two days), then stopped it. And it wouldn't restart!!!
Much to my embarrassment, the problem was simply damp in the distributor cap! Something I should have tried first, but hey-ho, it's now going again, but I think I will still have the fuel filter changed anyway.
And the RAC man didn't laugh at me.Well not that I saw anyway.................!

I'm surprised by that as there is actually a small drainage channel in the engine block itself at the bottom of the dizzy cap.

Either way thats another very good useful tip for others having the same problem so I will also remember that for next time!

No Andy, it was definately water, and a surprising amount too.
The huge air box makes getting the cap off a bit awkward too.He finally removed the whole thing.
BTW, it started first flick this morning!

I'll bet he was pleased to have a proper car to work on!

My neighbour is a retired RAC man, and he's often said that the trouble with newer cars is that they can't be fixed at the roadside, thus making life very dull!

My guess is that man-in-an-orange-van was chuffed at having a proper fixing job to do, and not just another tow to the main dealer!
