V70 is the same. to change blade you need to pop into service position. cleaning needs a little care when lifting but even a thug like me takes care of wipers !!!

On my old cars, when I wanted to change the blades, I switched off the ignition when the wipers were on and in the upright position mid-sweep. Also allowed me to clean under the parked position when blades were stopped mid-wipe.

Didn't need any fancy "position 0, position 1" gizmo - just common sense.

problem with that is it does put more strain on the arms and lifting it up is just easier for many vehicles. This is a proper service position.

Sorry, don't understand what you mean. What puts more strain on the arms & what is a proper service position?

A few years ago, I had the use of a 55 plate Octavia which had a similar set-up, and yes, I also scraped the trailing edge of my bonnet a couple of times! As already mentioned, it's for aerodynamics and it makes the driver's field of vision clearer aswell as helping to shield the wiper blades from muck, thereby preserving them for longer.
I also happen to suspect that it's just another little trick to put off the less confident owner from changing their own blades and instead persuade them to visit their dealer (as many are forced to do with changing light bulbs).
I have to remove the whole headlight from my wife's fiesta to change any of the bulbs within, and I've heard of some modern cars requiring whole bumpers to be removed for the same procedure - it's a scam!

S60/V60 are two pin design and remove the cable from memory far easier... certain cars well you need to be a magician.

My nearside light-bulb went kaput a couple of weeks ago. I went to the dealer as I thought it might be under the warranty. No it wasn't, but the said they'd just charge me for the bulb and install it Free....Good God I thought!!!
But I watched and it took all of 5 (yes Five) minutes to change. Couple of clips out came the housing and I'm your uncle.
