Rough Idle when cold and hesitation on acceleration
Hi All
I wonder if anybody has come accross the following issue with a s40 05 plate 2.0d and can point me in the right direction. My wagon has started to idle pretty rough when cold as well as chuck out some dark smoke when cold, she is also hesitating a little bit on acceleration. I have just had the egr valve changed by squire furnaux of pirbright after they did a diagnostic and said that the glow plug relay was showing a fault as well as one of the plugs as well as the egr valve but that the egr valve was the faulty one so I told them to go ahead and change it which took them 3 days and £500 quid later and I still have the same fault. Any help gratefully received as always Cheers David |

I would be straight back to Squire Furnaux and telling them what I really think of them and their diagnostic. At the end of the day you have paid them to do a proper diagnostic and fix on your vehicle and NOT for them to just guess at what is wrong at your expense. Take it back and tell them your not happy and they have not diagnosed or fixed the problem with your car correctly. Tell them it is exactly the csame as it was before you brought it in thus there has not been a single bit of difference since the EGR got fitted. This means there is nothing wrong with your original and you would like a refund and your old EGR re-fitted. Quite franky if all you've had done is a new EGR valve fitted then they are taking the P Eye Double S!! This is a half hour labour and cost of part (guess at approx. £200) so probably about £250 job. I think your problem sounds like a fairly common problem on the 2.0D which is the throttle body, if you do a search you will find plenty of info along with a few guides. One guide very recently for doing a clean (worth a try first!) then if that doesnt work you would be looking at a new one (part approx. £75) and as you'll have already done the clean you'll know how to fit it yourself (easy even if a complete novice with simple tools). Good luck, although if you do have glowplugs that need replacing then you may as well do all of them at the same time as opposed to just one (just my opinion). If you are thinking about getting parts then post back and I'll point you to a Rufe (FRF Motors - Volvo Dealer Swansea) who does great prices for forum members. |

Hi SonyVaio
Many Thanks for the info, I`ll certainly look in to the throttle body, They have done 2 diagnostics and just changed the egr valve, to be honest this has been an experience where customer service and engineering know how have totally failed. I have today emailed richard creacy who is the service director rmc@squirefurneaux.co.uk if anybody needs the address for future ref and asked him for his comments/explanation. I`ll post back with any updates. cheers David |

Well the wagon is back in with squire furneaux. They at first thought it was the glow plug relay so they have apparently changed that but now they are getting different readings from the plugs from when they first tested them so I will keep you updated as this one goes along.

Instead of it being a case of 'Computer Says' which is obviously not working, why don't they turn to some real mechanic work and actually test the plugs properly? It really is not hard. Either physical out and test or get a volt meter on them. Hope you get it sorted soon. They will do and say anything to deminish responsibility but you should noty give in and relent to them. If the EGR change done absolutely nothing then get them to put your old one back in and refund you for their mis-diagnosis. They don't sound to have done too well with their 2nd diagnosis either?? :star-wars-smiley -01 |

Hi Gremlin, i had similar prob with my 05 V50 2.0L D. Just last weekend i gave the throttle body a thorough clean and blanked off the egr and now she idles and runs fine! I always have it in my mind that if a light doesn't come on on the display, then its usually just a case of a bit of maintenance! Always come here for advice before letting garages feed you with a load of crap, and then charge you for the privilege as there is a wealth of knowledge that will save you a fortune and enable you to learn stuff about your car. Good luck

Hi All
As always, many thanks for all of your replies and advice, always very much appreciated. Well I got the car back today and I am amazed, she runs like a brand new car, I have to say in this case, fair play to squire furneaux of pirbright, they have changed the glow plugs and the glow plug relay and I have as expected just paid for the parts, they waived the labour without any kind of quibble. I am curious though, I always thought on a diesel that the glow plugs and the relay were just there for starting but according to the master tech that isn`t the case, and were responsible for the rough idling and hesitation when cold. Many Thanks as always Gremlin |
