Default A cheaper way to buy D5 engine oil?

I've been sniffing around this site looking at peoples comments on engine oil as My (2005) V70 D5 is due it's oil change. They all seem to be near enough the same price, around the £60 mark for the 6.5 litres. I was looking at the stuff GSF sell, and again around £60, except they sell the same stuff in 25 litre drums for £113 incl VAT, So I got one of them as I do intend keeping the car, That is almost 4 oil changes for less than the price of 2 so I was quite chuffed.

Looking at the specs it raises a question.

My car is 163 bhp non DPF on 12000 mile service intervals, The oil I require is A3/B3, the oil I have bought is A5/B5 long life. Does that mean I can (in theory) extend my service interval to 18000 miles. We do around 10-12000 miles per year and I would normally, on the old V40 change oil and filters then, and will carry on the same with the V70, or can I be even more chuffed and do it at 18000 miles. What say you?

I wouldn't unless the 18000 fell within the twelve month period and afaik the Euro III engined cars were never officially cleared for extended service intervals.

Are the engines not the same then apart from slightly tweaked ECU and a DPF?

An oil change is about getting rid of the crap it has accumulated over a given period from the engine, & the more frequent the change is done, the better for the engine & its components. 12000 to 18000 is 50% more junk. If the oil change can be timed prior to its mot, less hydrocarbons for the smoke test.
