Default Sqealing tyres

Hi there,
We have an 54 plate XC 90. Have had it for a year or so now. Just done 90k miles. When on concrete, like in multi stories, it sounds like we,re in an american police chase with sqealing tyres. Is there something in the 4wd drive system that isn't working properly? Its obviously causing the tyres to wear badly.

Cheers
JR

Are the tyres wearing badly? I would start with getting the wheel alignment checked. XC90's are prone to wearing the outer edge at the front but anything unusual is worth checking out. If tyre wear is ok it could just be the tyre reacting to the surface in the carpark.

My old XC70 used to do that, I don't know about the '90 yet as I've not had it in a car park yet. I also used to get the same scrubbing effect when making tight turns on loose gravel etc.
It was not a problem with the XC70, the tyre life was excellent, and I always put it down to the steering geometry causing the front wheels to describe different arcs when on full lock.
I have heard many other cars squealing in multi-storey car parks, I would say that its entirely normal.

If it was a normal 4wd car I would say the diff was locked or not giving freely. But I'm not sure how this system works. Its aligned ok.

perfectly normal in some. multistories, my old s80 would sometimes do it, I think its just a combination of the right surface and tight turns

My XC90 does this in the multi-storey carpark in Basingstoke. It's got a rubberised floor and sounds like I'm in a car chase when I turn the sharp corners. My 7 year old loves it!

Ahhh.... Hollywood Tyres. Nothing to worry about - just a combination of high friction caused by a tight turn onto a painted or sealed car park floor. My old BMW 5 Series would squeal like a banchee in some car parks, even at low speed!

The entrance to a flat surfaced car park I use does it regularly which the kids love - I'm not sure whether to be embarrassed or give it some!
It's the only place I've ever had it happen, so I guess it's just the type of tarmac ?
