Exclamation New Engine

Hi all,

I own an 1995 440 1.9 TD with a fair few miles on the clock...
and i was thinking instead of having a lot of work done on the engine to get it back to square 1 i could just drop a new one in it.... has anyone here done anything like this before? and does anyone know if any more modern engines would fit... I.E out of the S40... :S
i realise there would be a lot of work involved but i do love my 440.. and want to keep it for many more years.

Thanks in Advance

Hi

In my opinion, if you want to keep the car for a long time, with a basic regular maintenance, your actual engine is a pretty good option. D19t is maybe the strongest and easiest diesel engine to maintain. I got 200k miles on the clock and the engine is intact; never opened, removed injectors, injection pump, etc...
Changing the engine itself, is the easiest operation. The tricky part is to route his electrics, fit new mountings and all the other new parts: air-ducts, turbo, inter-cooler, fuel pumps, sensors, transmission, engine frame, etc. Basically you need a complete donor car.
Maybe a good start for finding a more modern engine is to look for engines with the same pendulum type engine mounting.
Best donor candidates for a more modern solution, I think will be s/v40 1 and s/v40 1,5 from which you got good chances to fit the engine on your JC5 transmission.
Also, a good starting question will be: what do you want from the new engine?

or did you want to replace like for like, just with less miles on the new engine?

The 1.9 diesel was borrowed from audi wasn't it? So you could possibly find another engine that way...

It's actually a Renault sourced engine then beefed up by volvo. I think the early s/v40's used the same engine to about the year 2000.

Hi There,

I have a volvo 480 engine for sale. it should fit on the 440 and 460 as they have the same chassis.
It is the 2.0petrol Automatic.
it only has 34000 miles!! pretty new. If you want to do the conversion, I can supply the gear lever, linkage, pedals engine and gearbox and also support where required but it is a decent engine to get hold of.

Call me 07861654928 to arrange

I have a very good 19td engine in a 440. The engine has had a full rebuild not long ago.
