Yep! As I looked for the door contacts in my C30 I looked for a while - until I twigged, that they are in the lock mechanisms...

I don't see what is wrong with simply either turning the lights to "on" and leaving them "on" or turning them to "off" and leaving them "off".

The C30 doesn't have any side lights, only parking lights. So when driving, you are actually driving on parking lights and that is in many nations on this planet illegal - why else would they be called "parking lights"?

I would suspect an inline buzzer might affect the electronics so best done by a sparky.
The lack of a headlamp is still a road traffic offence even if not being used so if you were to be stopped by VOSA or Traffic you could get fined.

Okay thanks for the update on switches/ locks, my bad.

If the C30 doesn't have side lights how did it pass type approval?

Nor me. This is surely one of the nice aspects of Volvo life. Forget the switch!

err leave them as volvo intended and you never have to worry about turning then on or off :-)
The latest cars have an auto position which change from those LED Fog / running lights to dip headlamps when daylight fails .
