ive just bought a tidy set of volans for my 2002 v70 d5 but they have no tyres on them im thinking about useing 215/45/17 but i dont want a hard ride and i tow a lot so was thinking about 225/50/17 ? for softer ride

What's the stock size tyre for a V70 on 17s?
Those two sizes have a difference in diameter of 32mm, which will have an effect on your gearing. Depending on what your car is designed to have you'll be out of spec with one of them at least.
