Default V40 Diesel no power

Hi all,
Long storey coming up, be prepared.

I have a V40 yr 2000 (V reg) 1.9 Diesel fitted with the Renault engine. Done 166k motorway miles.
Mum was driving it last week and she stalled it on the Hanger Lane roundabout. She restarted it and came home complaining of "weird" noises and heavy steering. Looked under the hood and found Alternator pulley at the end of the shaft at an angle, burn marks on the alternator shaft, and a shredded Aux belt.

RAC changed the Aux belt and fitted a new alternator.

Now there is no power, almost like the turbo is not kicking in. Also, Engine Management light comes on after reving to 2000ish. Engine sounds like a tractor, very loud. Difficult to start from cold, takes three goes. Result is thick WHITE smoke smelling heavily of Diesel. When engine is even slightly warm, starts first time with no smoke. Cant rev past 3500 in neutral. Takes ages to accelarate to 40mph. Like I said, feels like the turbo is not kicking in.

I had an EGR pipe crack 3 yrs ago, turned out that the EGR gasket with the half open tube thingy was blocked, so cleaned it all out and fitted a new pipe, changed myself. So I am not an novice at taking things apart. I am a novice to describing problems on the forum and my technical language is not great..sorry.

I cheacked the EGR pipe first, not cracked and not tell tale black soot in the enginewell or heat shield. Took of the EGR valve, not blocked but dirty so cleaned it. EGR gasket with the open tube thingy was very slightly blocked at the far end, so cleaned it. Took off pipe coming out of the turbo and the pipe coimng out of the turbo intercooler thingy, not blocked, no soot. Took of air inlet pipe going from Air filter to the turbo, not blocked. Managed to spin/turn the turbo vanes by hand, didn't hear or feel any resistance or metal grinding.

I cheacked the EGR vacuum regulator, didn't seem to be working as there was no suction or blow from the tube. I'm not electronically minded so I dont know how to check whether the vacuum regulater is mechanically faulty or that simply no power is going to it. The EGR valve is stiff to open so I imagine that the Vacuum regulator should be pretty strong to open the EGR valve. blocking the ends of the EGR vacuum regulator with the engine revving past 2000RPM, I expected to feel the suction/blow, but nothing.

I have VIDA (naughty copy) with OBD II cable but cant read any codes, can't get it to connect.

I've trawled thorugh this forum on simillar topics and found people with blocked/damaged/cracked EGR pipe/faulty EGR valve. Also read about "limp mode", could someone explain what this is.

The fact that I describe a load engine with no power with smoke on start up may mean multiple problems, but I can't pinpoint it.

Your experiance and suggestions are sought
Thank you very much for any assistance
