This morning I looked at my spare steering column/ steering lock and how it works. I think I can see what you mean about the lock popping in and out. It can be a bit lazy. This column/ lock was on a 1.7 340 GLE that I ran for 10 years and was fine. I recently broke he car up (sorry, but I must have given it 10 years more life than it would have got if I did not buy it). On to the steering lock on the 1989 1.4 340 GL that I am using, just tried jiggling the lock, no success, tried WD 40 and worked it in, but still no good. I am not worried about WD 40 possibly collecting dust, most oils will to a certain extent, and anyway might be removing this lock. Suspect that the steering wheel might have been forced in the past, but not sure. The car is in reasonable condition, bought it off a mechanic friend who had it for about 8 years. I'll post some pictures. For peace of mind, perhaps someone can confirm that the new MOT rule about steering locks does not apply to these cars? Many thanks Alex Pics coming Last edited by 340man; Jan 26th, 2012 at 10:46. |

Had a steering lock fail once- just as the garage MOTing it were about to start.
Not much fun, drill two holes as deep as possible and apply a sharp edged screwdriver or chisel to the remains of the mounting bolt. Whack it in an anti-clockwise direction and with a bit of luck it'll start undoing. Then off to the physiotherapists with you. |

Won't it be difficult to drill two holes in the head of the bolt because of the shape? The pick below shows the bolt head. Yes, having had a hernia operation that is still paining, not looking forward to doing this job! |

MOT test item doesn't apply due to the age of the vehicle. Do you need more proof than the tester's manual?
Yes, it's nice to have one working, but I can think of a 1001 more useful things to do with the time to a 300 series car. |

Yes, always things to do on a car, the 340 GL was owned by my friend a mechanic, and there were still things to be be done when I bought it, but I getting there. He replaced it with with a late extremely low mileage very basic 340 1.4. There were things for him to do on that too. |

Well if we're going down the road of reasoning things, the reason for a lot of changes to the MOT is the latest EU directive harmonising the rules on vehicle testing. The age-related parts would be a case of the UK avoiding gold-plating of the regulations.

Yes. Difficult to drill because, if I remember, the remaining bit of bolt is conical. Difficult to access, difficult to remove. Make sure the hernia clinic have a bed spare.
