wont start
My dad has a 1989 240 B200, it woudnt start a couple of weeks ago, it had stood for two days, and would turn over but woudnt fire, but would ocasionaly backfire. So changed the plugs, rotor arm, and checked leads. After a few atempts at starting over three days it finally went, and was ok for about a week, but yesterday morning, he drove about 5 miles, stoped at the shop, and now it wont start again, any ideas what to check / replace.

It could be anything Dan....... you will have to use the process of elimination.
I would be inclined to start with the ignition as it sounds like it is getting fuel, albeit unburnt. Leads can look fine and still be playing up so I would replace them as a matter of course. Have you checked the spark on each plug?

Start with the basics. It needs fuel and it needs a spark. If the car is fuel injected check the relay. These are notorious for failing. Can you hear the fuel pump before the engine cranks?. If you have no spark there are various possibilities depending on the model. There is an ignition amplifier which lives behind the battery on the inner wing. These are also known to fail. Get back with the exact model and even post a pic of the engine if you are unsure. You will get plenty of help on here!
Best of luck Scott |

What engine is it? if it's a B200F (electronic fuel injection) sounds like a bad crank position sensor.

Hi thanks for the coments, I will find the answers to the questions when I see the car tomorrow. Previously a long time ago, probably 3 years, the under car fuel pump wasn't working so as a temporary fix we wired it to work in the aux position, so it can be heard prior to trying to start the engine.
we have tested for a spark at the first plug, but not the rest. Where is the crank sensor and dose it just unscrew, we have a donner car with a blown head gasget for spares. |

It's only on the EFI engines (B200F), if your car has k-jetronic injection (B200E) it won't have it.
Either way it's located at the rear of the engine on top of the bellhousing held by one 10mm bolt. The wire to it degrades with age and causes an intermittent no spark.

Dan, look at the air intake manifold. If it is 'flat' as someone said 'a good place for your cuppa', then it's a b200e, if it is 'banana' shaped then b200f

It will tell you on the sticker at the top of the black plastic timing cover if it hasn't peeled off.
