Default V70 - Start Stop (Drive)

My new D3 V70 has start stop and I am a little concerned as if I leave it switched on on my normal journey to work in traffic the engine can auto stop and re-start on approx 10 to 15 occasions which when you compare to the single start I would normally have started the engine on that journey I am concerned that over the course of a year the extra use of the starter motor will cause me problems.

Has anybody any information on the use of the start stop function and when I should turn it off to ensure the engine and starter are not over used, also in the past people have said that you use more fuel if the engine is switched back on before 30 seconds after it has been stopped is that true of the start stop function.

Trust volvos judgement here , Stop/Start is worth 8% fuel saving if you actualy use it in traffic .
The car has a secondary battery which runs things whilst the engine is stopped ,There is a sophisticated data monitoring device on the battery, The starter motor is a special one ( Old technology with field coils not permanant magnets ! )
There are also a wealth of safety monitoring devices which will disable stop/start if circumstances demand that , This is a highly sophisticated system not something from an 80's VW polo ..have a read of your owner's manual ...

Thank you very much for your quick and knowledgeable reply, OK I will trust Volvo. It is nice to know that there are back up systems to ensure my repeated use of this system will cause no damage. Fantastic to save 8% on fuel consumption, I must say also to sit in traffic with the engine switched off is very calming.

That is interesting what you say about calming , it is a rare treat to drive a petrol volvo these days you get that sense with the comparitive smoothness of the engine , which was always there of course until diesels took over about 10 years ago ! With diesel fuel 11p a litre more expensive and the new generation of GDI petrol engines doing 40+ mpg i hope they make a comeback . Nice engine the D3 though .

I would love to have a petrol engine but the fuel economy of the D3 is excellent I am getting in excess of 600 miles to a tank of diesel and most people I have spoken to with petrol engines do not get near this figure.

The D3 also is a great engine to drive the power is about the same as the 2004 D5 that I had and the torque is incredible the engine pulls strongly from as low as 1200 rpm.

The calming effect comes from the fact the engine is turned off, it is so nice to sit there knowing I am not using any fuel, mind you the whole experience of the 2012 V70 is very calming it is a fantastic car.

Hi Nygul

Clan is correct in that there is a second battery and everything is beefed up and is designed so that it stops working if it detects things like a low battery etc.

My own initial experience of stop /start was that it was great.I was impressed how quick it re-starts.Then it went faulty and wouldnt start after stopping, so my confidence dipped.

Also when I am stopped I always leave a good gap to the car in front and keep my eyes on cars approaching from behind in case they rear end me! ...and personally I would prefer to have a running engine so I can move forward to avoid an impact.

Regards
ps a car uses approx 0.2 gallons of fuel every hour it is idling
