V70 D5 Geartronic 06 plate Ignition

Ignition key in and turned on. Panel and exteriopr lights out as normal, but nothing happens. Warning display - Start prevented, try again. Several tries, sometimes remove key and reinset, then suddely OK. Any ideas?

I'm now answering my own question.

The key fob is old and battered.
Having read the book, it stresses that the key should be properly extended from the fob otherwise the immobiliser may not all starting. So, I've done it as the book and so far not had any more problems
