Question Engine timing affected from start in reverse?

The model is a Sept. 2006 / Feb. 2007 V50 1.8 petrol engine. The car was parked on a hill and put into reverse after switching off. When starting the car later, the ignition was turned whilst the gear was still in reverse. The engine tone seems to be lower now. when idling the engine appears to vibrate a little. After two weeks and perhaps not related, after very very heavy rain yesterday when starting the car, the engine gave out a screech first. After switching off, waiting, then trying again it started ok.

Is the timing likely to have been affected by the attempt to start the car while it was in reverse?

Not likely. Timing is governed by computerised system picking up from various sensors around the engine like from cam shaft and crank shaft position, it is completely digitalised. there is no way that cranking in gear could affect that.

The only time that I've seen that happen was on a fifties two stroke motorcycle with pressed-in crank ends that would sometimes rotate slightly and affect timing.

Thanks for your replies.

The car has had its service now (November 2011) and the engine sound is at its regular pitch. No reasons given and no specific works carried out.

Thanks again for your replies.

Does anyone who replied want an old set of V50 wheel locking nuts? They came off today as advised during service. Two are ok, one's a bit rusty, one's really rusty.

Anyone wants them I'll send them to you. First interest gets them.
