Default General Auto-Engineering Question

I have to replace the trailing arm bushes on a non-Volvo.

The kit I got includes two sets of tapered roller bearings. By general concensus does it matter which way around I fit taper bearings or is there a "best practice" suggestion?

Thanks, Jules

Most bearings are set in place so you can see their spec/size, usually etched on the front surface.

Come on jules spill the beans,Which car are we talking about?
All I know is,the inner and outer must not be mixed if you have two the same. They aren't interchangeable. They are paired per bearing.
So the inner race complete with rollers must stay with the outer race it came with.
Also taper roller bearings tend to have a "PRELOAD" setting. This is the amount you tighten the nut to capture the bearings.I'm rubbish at explaining technical stuff but if you can imagine tightening a nut with a washer underneath and then slackening it off just enough to be able to turn the washer by hand. The force needed to turn the washer is the preload.
Even I'm confusing myself now,,,,,Basically it's the force needed to turn a shaft usually measured by pulling on it using a spring scale.like fishermen use.

If you over tighten it it will destroy itself by overheating. If undertight then it will wobble and fail.

Hope this helped a bit.
Regards Brian.

Taper bearings absolutely have to go in the right way, they are set up to take force in a particular direction and will rapidly wear and fail if force is applied to them in the wrong direction.

I'm presuming you're rebuilding a peugeot/citroen rear beam if it involves taper bearings, to be honest when I worked in a garage I rebuilt one of them then gave up and started removing the beam and sending it off to a specialist for an exchange unit every time I got one. It's one of those jobs that is just not worth the time and hassle as far as I'm concerned.

Okay, I found someone who had done a forum post.

The job is to replace the trailing arm bushes on my wife's 1999 Mk1. FIAT (as in, Fix It Again Tomorrow) Punto S60 Team.

The bearing set has two parts, a tapered carrier (with the roller bearings captured within it) and a "concave runner". The "runner" faces outwards so that, once pressed into place, the tapered bearing carrier can be offered up to it, a thrust washer placed over it then a nut, etc.

Logical once I saw it.

Many thanks all for your help.
