A noisy engine - Is it OK ?
Hi,
I'm new to the forum and have had a look around and can't find an answer so hope some of you can help. I have a 2000 W Reg 2.5D V70 (P2) - I guess it's the Audi engine as it's not the D5 engine. I have owned it now for about six months and since purchase it has not sounded spot on but it is my first diesel so perhaps they all sound like this ! I think the noise could be getting worse but that may just be my ears and worrying about things. I had it to a garage or two and was told the nosie was a bad tensioner arm spring on one of the drive belts so that was replaced but no difference. I have posted the sound on YouTube on this link :- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HWfi0M9VBhg I hope someone can tell me if it's a normal sounding 2.5D engine or should I be worrying ! The 'claterry' sound I am worried about is only really apparent when the engine is under load. Cheers for any help. Charlie |

Hello and welcome. I've listened to the youtube clip and the main engine noise sounds normal. There may be an underlying clatter which is probably the vacuum pump pushrod - normal and harmless. The vacuum pump is on the front of the engine and is driven off the camshaft by a pushrod which tends to get noisy. The pump acts as a brake servo as diesels don't produce enough "natural" vacuum as is the case with a petrol engine. If you search this forum and the 850 / V70 96-99 forum (covers your engine and more info than V70 00-07 forum) you'll find posts on the pump issue. Regards.
