1998 S70R cat
Help!
I have a S70R auto registered in August 1998. I have a horrible rattling noise emanating from my catalytic converter and have been advised that it’s the stuff inside that has broken and making a din. I’ve been looking around for a second hand one as Volvo want £550 for OE (part number 8602994). I notice that for a not much more I could get a Ferrita cat from Kalmar union. Unfortunately the pennies are not flowing at present, so I must find a value alternative. I have, however, come across this on eBay... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...=STRK:MEWAX:IT How do I discover how many lambda sensors I have and whether it is the straight flange? I’ve only got until the auction ends on the evening of the 16th. Heyulp!

Gizza job - I can do that

Hi Rich
thats mine one ebay, keep in touch via PM or ebay and we'll work out if it's suitable. If anyone can give a definitive answer re. the lambda sensors that would help us both. I'm sure the S70R auto has a 16T with straight flange outlet, but not 100% on whether the auto has one or two sensors (I know the manual variant only has one).

I've had a look at the downpipe and it carries the part number 1275218;
According to my reading of Vadis I think this will suit your car, but please get it checked to your satisfaction first! The parts diagram/numbers;

Sorry to add another post so quickly.
I've been advised on another forum that your car will more than likely have two sensors. It's not what you (or I) want to hear, but please be sure before buying and being disappointed.

Hmm, so according to VADIS it seems that the part number you mention is attributed to 8603019, whereas when I rang Volvo in Salisbury (first one I could actually get through to) they quoted me 8602994 as the part number suitable for my car. Does this mean that 9443920 and 9189238 would also work fit?
Not really sure what the numbers in brackets are - guessing they may be USA and Canada part numbers? Although this makes sense for 8602994 as there is a (USA) (CDN) label, but not for 8603019. I guess the only real way to be definite is to get the car looked at by my local Volvo indy -David Pengelly Autocare. If they can tell me it has one lambda and a straight flange then great! I guess if mine does turn out to have two lambdas then it must have a different ECU, or be programmed differently. Thanks for your help Yosser!

I may be being thick here but...
Would it be possible to make another hole for a second lambda probe? I did create a thread earlier in the year all about this but it was all lost in the server crash, didn't think much of it at the time as the noise didn't bother me at first but it is getting annoying when on tickover, or at traffic lights. I'm sat in a lovely car making a noise like an old banger! Cheers

I'm not a welder, but I could envisage problems with trying to weld it neatly. I doubt that it could be welded in in the original position without risking damage to the cat, so it would have to go in the pipe after the cat. You'd probably need to extend the lead on the sensor if that was the case - which is fine, as I have here a genuine Volvo lambda extension lead unused Joking apart, I'm not trying to twist your arm - please be sure that it's going to work before committing.

Drat!
My car has the cat with TWO sensors. I don't think it'd be worth it trying to fabricate a custom hole - I will just have to keep looking. At least the part is just annoyingly noisy and the car still runs ok. Thanks so much for all your help.
