BOSCH ETM's
Although I have a 51 plate S60, I have discovered that it is actually a 02 model year that is fitted with a Bosch ETM, Does this mean that it wont fail like the Marinelli ETM's or just that it is less likely to fail?
Do these ETM's still require a clean along with the crankcase ventilation etc... as Volvo UK has offered to do this FOC, is this likely to cause more problems than it will solve even though it is a bosch unit. |

No worries at all with the new Bosch ETM. It works in a completely different way to the MM unit. No moving parts to wear out being the main feature.
I expect that the crank case clean will be part of the standard service schedule (probably every couple of years). That will be enough normally. So you can rest easy now. Oli

Cheers!
Thanks Oli,
Having owned my S60 for 2 years now I have always been 'waiting' for those dreaded warning signs to appear. I only wished that I had got the mirror's out earlier to see that it was a Bosch unit under the bonnet! I can now concentrate on sorting out the control arm bushes to correct the feeling of driving a jelly around a skid pan. |

Just a thought for the solution to the ETM problem; is it possible to fit the Bosch unit to replace the Marinelli?
Or am I being stupid! Ed

I've been asking that very question myself. Seems not to be an easy job, although as the C70 changed to this unit, as did the S60 and S80, but without changing the engines, then there clearly is a way.
Nor really sure how to get a decent answer on this from Volvo. Car to give them a call? Oli

Hi,
I asked this a while ago as a possible solution for Volvo to cure the issue once and for all. It seems not as there are different ECU programming involved and some different wiring. However, for a person to do this on their own... Not sure. May be an interesting project for the interested and able... Des. . .

From what I have read and found out on this, the unit (Marinelli) is replaced with a re-conned one. This because the two are incompatable systems. Do advise if you have information we haven't had available before please.. Des. . .

Yellow for replacement MM The Bosch ETM is not a drop in replacement for the MM as a service item, although it is the replacement post 2002 engines. Shame, because if the Bosch unit could be fitted to pre 2002 engines we'd all be happy. Oli
