Default Thermostat jiggle pin position

Hi
When replacing the thermostat, is the position of the jiggle pin (air pressure release) important when putting the thermostat in the housing.
(Volvo v40 2003.)

In step 4 in link below - it looks like there is a little cutaway in the thermostat housing for the pin.

https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/2001+Vo...lacement/12551

But in other images i seen on the Internet there is no cutaway.

Standing in front of the engine, my pin was in the 4 or 5 o'clock position i.e. towards the radiator. (can't remember if my housing has the cutaway - must check)

Regards
Donal.

The pin is to release air.
Air is always at the top so the pin needs to be where the air will be.

A couple of clear photos would really help.

^^^^Knows his stuff, the picture you have of the thermostat is not of a Volvo, the stat sit vertically on these engines, but take some photo's of your car and stat and you will be sorted out soon.

Here are some photos - hopefully they are clear enough. Its a left hand drive.
There is no cutaway in the termo housing.
Pin can only face two ways - towards car, or towards road.

The coolant liquid is not level so either there is a tilt in the thermo housing or i did not park on level ground (looked level to me). Based on the tilt in thermo housing i'm assuming pin would go in facing the road (the way it was) because the road side is higher.

Thermo is Volvo - Wahler, 90 degrees, 9180811 (part number)

If they are the only options, I would say towards the road.

Which direction was the previous thermostat fitted?

It was facing the road so i will put it back in that way.
(I asked the original question because I read one or two people saying it goes the other way, and i wasn't sure if my thermo was put in wrongly).

I honestly can't think how it could possibly matter if the thermostat is horizontal.

EDIT: the cover of thermostat can only go in two positions. The pin can go in any position. - I put it back in the way it was.

1. If doing coolant flush I can drain coolant from radiator bleeder or taking off lower Rad house, that right? Is there a drain plug under engine also? Volvo v40 2003 petrol.

2. I didn't take coolant cap off when checking thermo - now I know I should have, when I finished I opened cap to fill it and got a puddle of coolant near passenger side wheel. The coolant reservoir had empty. I filled reservoir up and liquid stayed. I opened cap again the next day and same thing happened. Both times with cold engine. I haven't opened cap again but liquid is staying. What happened? Should I be worried?
