Lower the subframe out of the bottom of the car with the engine and box on it.

You may be able to do it out the top, but I don't know anyone who has done.
Rob.

Out the bottom with the engine, gearbox, suspension and steering rack etc on the subframe.
Done many like this - i have the lot out in little over an hour! If you have access to a ramp - disconnect everything that will hold the engine in (wiring, pipes, prop shaft, exhaust etc) Get the car about 2 foot off the ground and position 4 axle stands under the subframe. Lower the car onto the axle stands and unbolt the four 18mm subframe bolts. Send the car up in the air and you are left with the engine and box on the subframe on the axle stands - on the floor. Its now nice and easy to remove all the other stuff from the engine, driveshafts out, turbo off, transfer box off etc. Now unbolt the the engine mounts and lift the engine and gearbox off the subframe complete.
