Think thats the 1st job tomorrow, then I speak to a guy I work with who is a VW specialist, see if he could set the pump timing up.

Ok, got the sucked out, 2.5 lts in total to bring it to the mark, and picked up the new sump bung today from Volvo, so I'll get the oil changed next week hopefully.
On the hard starting note.... Got the tools to set up the pump timing, it started better, but still not great, anyway, it ran smoother, but still seemed under powered, then, while heading to a friends house, everything went back to normal and the lambda light came on, also back to hard starting. Went this morning and had the code read, code 718 came up, Injection timing negitive advance I think was the wording, anyway, spoke to a diesel specialist how says there's a common valve problem inside the pump and the pump probably requires an overhaul, which I'm sure will cost ££££'s. So rather than mess about removing pumps and getting it checked ect, I've i bit the bullet and sourced a pump thanks to Belfasts80. There's other wee annoying niggles that had my doubting the pump in the back of my mind, so I guess time will tell, hopefully I'll know this side of xmas.

Set it as per the VW experts advice, DTI in the back of the pump and turned clockwise to 55, is this not right?
Today its been starting well and the management light was even out for the 1st 10 min of my journey home from work, but came on again.

That is the basic mechanical timing BUT , it has to be fine tuned electronicaly to get it spot on . the warning light will come on if the timing is outside of its specifications . Adjustment is made by slackening one pump tensioner and tightening the other or vice versa , this makes a minute difference to the length of the belt on the drive side of the pump belt and makes a difference to the timing which is critical ..
I tend to make the adjustments on the pulley on the pump end of the camshaft after setting the tensioner midway .. You are best leaving this to a volvo dealer who has experience in doing it ( not all dealers would have someone used to doing this ) Practice makes perfect ... so the timing of the pump is set mechanicaly so that the engine will run , then set to a position that the ECU recognises , then the ECU takes care of the pump timing .. For interest the electronic setting on the tool to get is -0.5 ( Minus 0.5 ) you will find it way out when it is read .

The guy that read the code for me worked for Volvo when these S70Tdi's came out, it was between him and a diesel specialist that they decided the pump was at fault. the specialist said to take the pump off and take it to him to be tested, but could cost between £30 - £50. But the Volvo guy seems to think that setting it as per the VW's guys instructions should be good enough. The Volvo dealer in Antrim doesn't have a diagonstic unit to use on my petrol S70, so the diesel S70 is going to be the same story, the dealer in Belfast charges £70/hr + VAT, and I don't honestly believe they could service a wheel barrow properly, so I think trying a pump is the better option at the minute. Both these guys have done belts the way I set up the timing and have had no issues. If the pump doesn't make things any better, I guess I'll just have to live with it. If it wasn't for the fact its a bugger to start I could live with the way its driving.
Volvo's in this part of N Ireland aren't very popular, and finding someone with the proper equiment and knowledge to work at them is ever harder.

Hello
Depending on the model of TDi, you may find that there are a lot of places where the right computer equipment is a bit scarce. As far as I know, there are only 5 garages in Norfolk that could change the cambelt on my 2000my V70 TDi because of the dynamic timing issue. One is a Bosch centre, two are well-established Volvo Independents and one is the main dealer. Naturally, none of them are cheap!
