Anti-Roll Bar Bushes to replace
I had a note from my last service that my V40 2004 1.8 SE Classic (Petrol) needs new front anti-roll bar bushes to pass the next MOT due soon. These are now knocking on bumps, so I need to do something about it. They are £66 from Volvo spares but £253 for Volvo to fit them - ouch!
So, can anyone advise me please on: 1. Decent replacement anti-roll bar bushes for my V40 2. My Volvo Anti-Roll Bar bushes part No. so I can find OEM ones (if you think it a good idea) 3. How to easily fit new anti-roll bar bushes (cos I've got no idea) 4. Known gotchas and "watch out for this" when doing it Many Thanks

Replacing the anti-roll bar bushes is a bugger of a job apparently as it means dropping the sub frame to get to the top of the bolts.
What I did after losing one to a pothole was to buy these poly bushes for about £24: http://www.superflex.co.uk/proddetai...436-2948%2F19K And take to my trusty mechanics who charged £110 including VAT to drop the sub-frame and install them for me.

Fixed
ok, I had my V40 independently checked for the clonking from the front suspension. It was not that the anti-roll bar bushes were worn out as the Volvo Dealer had advised. These front bushes and drop links were fine (my MOT this year confirmed this too)...
The actual problem was easily found when the car was jacked up. The independent showed me the play in the front left wheel that moved at least 1 inch from side to side when the steering lock was on (which I would have guessed would have been a worn wheel bearing). It was actually found to be the left inner rack joint that needed replacing. The reason it went bad was that the gaitor had let dirt into the joint so it had worn. Once the left inner rack joint was replaced (with a proper Volvo part), the clonking went away and the car steering is much better now too.
