Colour Codes
Can someone tell me what the -1 stands for on some 1960's Volvo colour codes? For instance I have just bought a '67 1800S colour 95-1 (Ice Blue), however I have also seen straight 95 on the build plates for ice blue cars. Its the same with Pearl White, Ive had 79 and 79-1 and Graphite Gray 80 or 80-1 Does the -1 perhaps mean a lighter shade (this car is virtually white) or a different paint perhaps and why was it never offered on red or green cars etc.
Also I have taken a Motorolla 8 track tape player out of the car. Before I throw it in the bin would be of use to someone? I guess these things must be getting rare now and I'd rather give it to someone than chuck it - if anyone wants such a monstrosity. Mike |

Yeah Dai, I kind of suspected that the -1 (at least on some colours) must be a lighter shade. But I've never seen, or heard of, a 2 or a 3 and I've never seen any shade options for most of the 1800 colours like 85, 91, 94 or 46 etc. I have hundreds of vehicle register forms for 1800's and apart from 79-1, 80-1 and 95-1, they all have two digit colour codes.
Do you know if these multiple shade options would have been available only on the Amazon or 140 ranges but not the 1800, or would they have been applied to the 1800 as well but not always displayed on the build plate? Certainly the colours seem to vary from car to car but I always put it down to incorrect re-sprays. Thanks, Mike |

The three shade options is from paint factors who still have all the mixing details. We have found often a car will have no shade number after the colour but could be 1 - 2 or 3.
If you look at 200's and 300's there can be about 10 shades of the same colour but they are marked on the id plate |

Thanks for that. I've will check waht the darker versions of ice blue look like - I don't like this lightest version, it just looks like a dirty white car.

You may find it hard to find a place that still has all the shades available. A lot of companys only have the make up for shade 1 of all colours.
I hope you can find the one you want. |

Can you point me in the direction of a paint supplier that has the original codes?
Thanks, Mike |

Autopaint International Ltd 0151 549 1409 have been able to supply me with correct paint - they have the mixing codes but only offer the standard shade. They do mail order and can supply celly - some shades are available in two pack as well. I know one we did we could only get in celly so used two pack laquer over it. Give them a call they are very helpful.
