740 TD overdrive not engaging

The overdrive on my 740 TD has been playing up for a few weeks. Most times it would engage correctly but sometimes it would not and then jump into 5th after a short while. Last Saturday my wife had to drive the 250 miles from Cheadle Hulme to Selsey in West Sussex where we have just moved and she couldn't engage 5th for the whole journey, still only dropped tp 30 mpg!

I am not too mechanically inclined but what could be the problem? I had a superb independent Volvo garage in Stockport but have no idea of a similar person around here. Does anybody have a recommendation? I seem to remember someone posting a good mobile Volvo mechanic recently but can't find the thread.

My old 940 auto had an overdrive switch on the gear lever. It failed and wouldn't engage properly.
