XC70 2007(new shape)
Hi, I'm new on here but needs some help. The car I have has done 88,000 mile on with fsh with volvo in which I have had for 15 months. Anyway on the problem, I think my steering rack is needing attention as when try car is at a standstill or low revs the steering is impossible to turn, when you are moving with revs you can not tell there's a problem. When the car is stood the wheel will not turn until you rev the engine. Any ideas? Is it costly? Or should I get rid?

Hi and welcome to the forum,
It sounds like you have a common fault with the phase 3 cars, what happens is the power steering pipes start to brake up. This causes tiny bits of alloy swarf to collect in the filter at the bottom of the power steering reservoir, this restricts the flow and causes the pump to fail. some have success in cleaning or replacing the reservoir but it will only buy you some time before the same thing happens. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but the cure is a new pump, new reservoir and replace all the pipes. I was lucky as i noticed this was wrong when i test drove the car and only agreed to buy it if the dealer sorted the fault. He fitted a new pump which only lasted a few thousand miles, it then got new pipes and another new pump. Sorry can't help with price as i didn't see any invoices. Kenny |
