Engine keeps dying
My 2002 V70 manual T5 keeps dying. It first did this some 3 months ago, it just cut out with no warning. After about 5 minutes it started again and has run without cutting out until today.
Vida/Dice reports no codes that would cause this, nor can I find any help monitoring any dice/vida live data that might point me in the right direction for a cure. The only anomaly I can find is left side of the fuel tank is empty and the right side has 25 litres. I can't find a fuel pressure readout in vida/dice, only relay status. If I try to restart the car as soon as it stops, the engine just churns without a flicker of interest. Wait a couple of minutes, and it busts into life as if nothing was ever wrong, only to die without warning after about 5 minutes. Anyone got any suggestions of what I could monitor, or possible causes. Cheers Bob |

Left side of tank should be empty, I assume you have around 1/8th tank left? The tank pump, when working correctly empties the passenger side of the tank and deposits it in the drivers side where the pick up is.
What are the symptoms when it stops? a gradual loss of power or a sudden cut out? The D5 has a fuel pressure readout under the ECM module, don't know if the T5 has a similar function? |

Thanks reggit...
She just dies - like you switch it off, no splutter, just dies. Been all through the ECM module readout but nothing there - will check if my 2004 V70 has a read out function for fuel pressure tomorrow. The way it cuts out makes me think "electrical" but because it will restart after a small delay its making me think "petrol"/mechanical The confusing thing is that no codes are being thrown....grrrr VIDA/DICE appears to be no help in this instance Cheers Bob |

Sounds like something's killing the ignition, my first thought would be the ecu relay coil breaking down. Worth a shot? It's in the engine bay fuse box.
Assumes ignition switch not playing up. |

I had this problem on a vauxhall couple of years ago. Cold start good , drive for 10 mins and cut out, would not pick up during cranking at all. After 10 mins, started ok and drove for 10 mins and off again..
The fault was the crank position sensor. I measured its resistance at room temp and it was say 5k ohms - ovened it to 60deg C and remeasured it and was open cct. As it cooled a bit snapped back to 5k. Repeated the test a few times, repeatable. Put a new one in and has been ok since. Last edited by D5meister; Oct 2nd, 2014 at 20:24. |

I don't seem to have a "ECU relay" in the engine bay - least not according to my hand book.
I have FMA2 Engine management system main relay which I'm assuming what you are referring to?? There is also a FST2 Fuel system relay there too As well as about half dozen or so other relays which control mundane stuff. The above two relays are the only possible ones, the failure of which could cause my problem. Cheers Bob |
