Talking LPG a cleaner fuel - the proof!

The attached two pictures are conclusive proof of how much cleaner an LPG engine runs:

The first picture is of my 97 V70 2.5 10v auto, 235,000 miles up, on LPG for almost 190,000 of those miles, oil and filter changed every 10,0000 miles.

The second picture is of SWMBO's petrol 98 S70 2.5 10v auto, 140,000 miles up, oil and filter changed annually, (every 6,000 miles or so).

Same car (near enough), same engine, same oil, same maintenance, same family ownership, bought at the same time (2005).

Cheers

Jack

Default LPG heaven!

Well as you're located in God's very own county, how about Autogas 2000 at Thirsk?

They are the bees knees when it comes to LPG. 01845 523213 and ask for John or Chris.

I've no interest in the business other than as a very happy customer, and they are absoltuely brilliant. One of the best companies, and definitely the best automotive-related business that I have ever dealt with!

Cheers

I just rang Autogas. They don't list the T5 as a good idea to convert to LPG. Aparently it's prone to burning out valves!

Well that's that then..oh well

That's a shame. At least you know - better that than get the job done to find out the hard way!

Maybe Dai (Classicswede) on here can advise you on lube systems.

Also, you could maybe get hardened valve seats fitted, but that's possibly going to get expensive.

Cheers

Autogas are the fist to actually say this. Clearly some companies are happy to just do it anyway. So does LPG run hotter?

Yes, my 340 runs on LPG; the oil never seems to change colour.

Out of interest, do you change the oil when its this clean?

Yes - always at 10k regardless. Although the oil's still pretty clean at that I've assumed that it'll be starting deteriorate anyway.

Some of our cars are LPG only and never see a drop of petrol in them. At the 10,000 mile oil change the oil comes out looking like it had only just gone in. The oil needs to be changed due to the repeated heating and cooling. What you are avoiding with LPG is the contamination.

Most Turbo engines can be converted to LPG with no valve problems. The reason years ago for many installers avoiding turbos was down to the fact the technoldgy was not there to acuratly fuel under low load and boost.

Some of the newer T5 engines can have problems with the valves/seats but this is solvable for conversion with some simple head work. The traditional valve saver systems offer little help to turbo engines.

On the subject of cars that have problems most UK ford's suffer, most 4 cylinder Toyota's. The Range Rover with the Jag engine can be done but the petrol ECU has to be reflashed to avoid problems. GDI engine can also be done but need to run part petrol and part gas making them hardly worth converting.

Exactly. It makes me pretty angry that so many installers seek to cover their incompetence with BS about soft valve seats. It's no wonder LPG has such a bad reputation, given some of the advice I've been given over the years...

cheers

James
