Default tap tap tap

I've been hunting for a tapping noise on my car for ages, I can only hear it with the windows down but make the car sound rubbish.
At first I thought it was tappets but I don't think it is any more. I went to look at some more v70's the other day and asked the seller what the noise was, he says "its where the exhaust goes into the turbo, they all make that noise"
Listening to it hard I can beleive that, the noise is louder listening at the front wheel arches or underneath, if you lift the bonnet and stick your head in the sound is drowned out by the top end noise but is loud again when you stick your head to the side of the car.

The noise is a tapping, rapping type noise which is in time with revs and is there hot or cold.

Do they all do this? Is it just me? Any experience?

Thanks in advance.

Was going to suggest suspension/wheel bearing, can you replicate it when the car is not moving?

Check the crank pulley ! It took me nearly 4 months to track it down but now mines replaced it's so much quieter. I was told by loads of people that's it was just a noise I had to live with,I'm glad it's fixed now.

Yup, defo engine related, its at its worst when parked next to a wall (either side) so the sound can bounce off it.
Doesn't matter if the cars hot or cold!
How did you diagnose the crank pulley? what was the sound like?

Well, I've been poking about, again! The noise doesn't seem to be coming from the belt area and appears to be about once every 2 revs (375 times a minute at idle) I'm pulling my hair out! It's so annoying!
Any experienced volvo types that could have a listen for me?
