Bloody hell, £425 to tax an XC90 D5 Geartronic. £235 if you have a manual box but who wants to drive a manual. The RX400h comes in at £235 with auto box and 280bhp. I think the XC60 D5 will be similar to the Lexus.

You have to thank Alistair darling for that. When he wanted to raise tax and 4x4 were devilsed, he jumped on the band wagon and created new bands of road tax.

A shame, a climate change is happening but politician using it ton raise tax has made people scacastic about it. Exactly like speed camera.

Volvo re-assessed the xc90 in 2008 and managed to drop it below 225.

So you have been unlucky to buy one which falls in the wrong band

I haven't bought one. I have an S80 D5 geartronic that has actually gone down from £215 to £180 because of it's lower CO2 output. I'm researching now for ideas as to what to change to and we both have decided we want an SUV type vehicle. The XC90 D5 was on the list but I wouldn't have one with a manual gearbox. I think in reality we'll be going to the Lexus RX400h if I can find one at the right price. Not keen on the interior of the XC60.

Think you need to compare the total cost of ownership (and obviously your requirements/ wishes). £100 a year extra for road tax over a year is not a strong factor (but cannot be ignored either).
I guess what I'm trying to say is its the total cost that matters and you can get distracted when looking at the detail.

The RX would be almost £200 a year cheaper on VEL costs and offers similar mpg to a D5 XC90.

Why we want an SUV is not for the off road ability, if that were the case I'd be looking at a Disco, a Range Rover or a Land Cruiser, it's simply because of the load space it offers. Having packed in racing motorcycles around I've gotten into road cycling and rather than use a rack with the bikes on the outside I'd prefer to use an internal rack. It'll be mostly used on short runs with the odd long run so urban economy is the all important figure. Reading the horror stories of transmission failure at 65k on the XC90 doesn't fill me with confidence either. If a decent one came along at a good price I wouldn't rule it out straight the way though.

Surely the most sensible vehicle for you is a large mpv? Something like a lwb voyager, espace, 807/c8, galaxy/sharan/Alhambra. They have emissions of 170-199g in diesel form and are cheap to buy and insure.
D5 geartronic xc90s pre2008 did have a punitive vel applied to them but this is reflected in their selling price and as such are a bargain. They cost about 2 fill ups to tax more then their manual or younger siblings. The more recent xc90s have lower emissions and indeed the manual is no longer available in the uk.

There will be lots of lexus hybrids at keen prices over the next year or so because they no longer qualify for congestion charge exemption so these may be good buys.

Good luck with your purchase

Well if you source a newer XC90 it will be in the lower tax bracket.
What don't you like about the interior of the XC60?

What are you wanting the SUV for? The lexus really isn't that good in the rough stuff
