wd40 on manifold studs
Just a quick question, I have been spraying manifold studs with WD40 at night on a cold engine until my friend can have a go at changing the intake gasket.
Today I started it and a lot of smoke is coming of the manifold, is it safe to drive it ? |

The smoke is probably coming from the WD burning off. Suggest run the engine with the bonnet open for about five or ten minutes, or until the smoke ceases. It will do the same if you elect to drive the car but I'd go for the first option, that way you can see what's happening and it will give you peace of mind.

If you are using the WD40 to free the studs Duck oil is a far better penetrating oil.
It will still smoke on start up as the oil burns off but I have found nothing finer for freeing siezed threads even in a salt laden coastal environment. Paul. |

Water Disspersent (sp) 40, its not a penetrating oil. Those mentioned above are.
Tho my prefered is PB-Blaster which I found mentioned on a yank site. 50:50 mix of Acetone & ATF. Not failed me..........yet!

Its all rubbish compared to volvo's own Rapid Rust Loosener
Part number 1161658 about £6 for an aerosol , It is slightly acidic and really does make the difference , I discovered it about 20 years ago i happily pay £6 a can as it is worth it .
