Default Twin carbs

Right, in the long term future, im considering fitting twin carbs to Thor

The carb needs rebuilding with £100 worth of parts realistically...and I know twin carb kits are available....

So, who thinks it would work? What size carbs would I need? Who's coming for the audiable pleasure of the first start up?!

What sort of performance increase could I expect if I fitted a suitable camin conjunction? What about mpg?

Steve

if going that far you'd be better off with 2 x 45 DCOE webers which is in effect 4 carbs , economy will be out the window however but it will sound terrific and go a little better with a performance camshaft .
If you wanted your twin carbs you'd need strombergs or SU in a 1 3/4 inch size which is the same size as you already have , but setting them up would not be easy on your own and you would need the manifold .

saying all that . it would be much better to fit a B23E or B230E with its injection and ignition control from a GLT . Its a lovely crisp responsive engine and can be as economical as yours and virtualy bolt on / in ...

Hi Nick, yeah I know the economy would be out of the window, but this would be for when Thor becomes a "weekend/second" car.....

My plan was to buy the manifolds anyway and buy somesort of bigger carbs like webers...

Im not swapping the engine - mines too original, full stop.

The carbs and cam I can swap back in a couple of hours with the only cost being a new gasket or two...

I could almost do it just for the sound!

Hi Steve- Wouldn't it be as easy to convert to a B21E cyl head and injection system? The K-jetronic used by Volvo was very simple and should be much more straightforward than any aftermarket conversion. I don't think you'd need to go as far as changing the whole engine to a B230e. You coudl keep your cylinder block. The B21 was the strongest engine Volvo made, the internals were lightened and thus weakened when they went to the 200/230 series.
Alternately, check out

they have carbs rebuilt for £105 all in. Or keep searching ebay- I got a NOS carb for £35. In my experience, when the stock carb works, it works great. Just having mine replaced made my car drive like a totally new car- better mpg and it seems like more HP too.
I've tried fitting three 2 barrel carbs to a car in the states, and just couldn't make it tractable- great for fast straight lines, but not so good for anything else. I would have had to have done the cams, redesigned the cylinder heads, and had a bespoke exhaust to have made it work. Uprating carbs can be just the tip of a very expensive iceberg!!
Volvo engineers spent many an hour finding the perfect tuning for 240's. I doubt that anywhere near as much engineering went into the aftermarket set ups.

Hi Redboy, thank sfor the advice, but seriously, converting to the twin carb setub is just a case of getting hold of the manifolds (i have a source...) and 2 carbs....

It literally bolt on after that....

Same to swap it back, just fit a new gasket...

Scott..

ps.. The power comes on strong, sounds great and is, maybe, the most addictive thing you will ever do, plus you can get it rolling roaded/re-jetted for your style of driving...

Good luck..

Thanks for that. Yeah I like the idea...just need to wait for the car to become a second car - I can barely afford to run it as it is as a daily driver....
