Electrics: 850: - Car Died.

It will be off to the garage tomorrow, if not straight from the A10 today, but just wondered if anyone could throw some light on what might have gone wrong with it.

The car was parked up in a field all day without lights, radio etc left on. Then when he went to go home all the warning lights on the dash came on. So in his wisdom he thought or dea its a bit cold, I'll drive home. 10 minutes later the radio begins to fade, lights begin to dim, the speedo stops working and he loses all power steering. Manages to pull in, and calls me! He's waiting for the breakdown service to come out, but I wonder if anyone had any idea what this might be?? Is it likely to be very serious? The car is a N reg, and has only done about 90K, been serviced all its life, although at the last service engineer said it might be time to think about changing it!!

Oh well. See what happens.

this happened to me when the aux belt snapped the belt drives the power steering alternator and air con pump check the belt on the power steering pump is intact this is the v belt

T'would be interesting to know why the engineer thought it was time to change at that mileage?

stusT5 - I hope its the Auxilliary belt, hopefully the engineer can fix this on the roadside?

Paul - the engineer said that the car was "looking a bit old and tired and possibly a few expensive bits likely to go". He suggested we look at changing it before the summer service.

generator has packed up to me, either cos its knackered or belt has gone south, i would expect if it was the belt the steering would have been noticable before the loss of leccy, either is non terminal....a broken belt should be easily visably obvious too down the side of the engine......

I've had this car for 8 years and it's never broken down before (except when I left the interior lights on).

The breakdown man says the belt is fine so it might be the "ECU"?? or the alternator. Anyway he's towing it home for us.
