There's been a few nice 164s on eBay all of a sudden - the nice metallic blue/green one with low miles and one owner (currently relisted), a maroon one (currently for sale) and a rather interesting manual-with-overdrive non-fuel-injected model (triple SU carbs) with period alloys and tuned engine that was sold last week by an ex rally guy.
Anyone on here own(ed) or know them? Anyone on here bought the one that sold? |

I hope you are right and they are all nice ones as if all goes to plan and she passes an mot tomorrow I will be collecting MLW 76L and taking her home to meet my 18OOE who I am sure will not be happy to move over and give up her place in the garage.
I have bought various cars over many years but I expect to have the usual disturbed night tonight waking up and wondering what have I bought? what will I discover when I get her home? is it all a big mistake? The 1800E is great but seems to be getting lower, more difficult to get into and heavier to drive. Could it be my wife and I are getting older? Anyway the 164 with pas and auto for sale a few miles down the road seemed like a good idea, but only time will tell. No doubt I will on here be asking for help very soon. Come to think of it I don't even know if I have to use a lead substitute and octane booster in the fuel, or the grade of engine oil to use. Any advice on any topic concerning this car will be gratefully received. |

Hi Woolfie
Welcome to the select world of 164 ownership! You've bought the one car I REALLY wanted off the 'bay - even though I don't need it! I have a 164TE the same colour, but currently garaged with an auto 'box fault which must wait until the weather gets warmer again. That is my favourite colour even though I currently drive a light blue one - retired beggars can't be choosers! Mike B isn't too far from you and frequently appears on here, but john h is the most prolific writer on 164 restoration - check his regular progress reports and photographs. Unlike John's, my injection car is totally original and until very recently was my day/show car, being used for shopping and classic car shows. However, its shortly going back into winter storage, to be replaced over winter by a 240 estate. Hope you look after it and its every bit as good as it looked on the pics. Paul |

Thanks to Paul and John for your words of welcome.
Well it's home now and I need to clear more space in the garage as it's bigger than I thought! It pased an MOT today with one new wiper blade and a new flasher relay. On the drive home the heated rear window was not working but I know it was ok a few days ago when I went to look at the car. Maybe when they put the new flasher relay on they disturbed a wire on the hrw relay if they are close together? I will have to get a workshop manual soonest (on to ebay later I suppose) as at the moment I don't even know where the relays live on this car. The drive home was very good apart from the tickover falling away to a stall at traffic lights, not good on an automatic. Maybe I can speed up the tickover a bit tomorrow but again I think I need the manual to find which knob on the carbs to turn. I am sure it will all be fine tomorrow if it stops raining. Jonathan |
