"Why don't I buy a more modern car?"
I am frequently asked why I don't buy a more modern car.
My standard answers are: 1) The wrong wheels are driven on most newer cars 2) They doen't handle as well as my 240 3) They don't have adequate headroom 4) The seats leavingme aching after 30 mins 5) Very low repair cost and easy maintenance - today we fitted new rear wheel bearins to an S60 at a cost of over £200 6) Will not carry as much weight as well as my 240 7) Not such a good tow vehicle 8) Not as solidly built What would you add to the list? Mike

Modern cars and uncomfortable, expensive, ugly and horrible to do even the simplest things to. I hate them.

your right Mike
Hi all,
just spent the last 30 mins installing a wiring loom into my 240 for a set of Volvo driving lights ( picked up at the BKV ). Wired up the switch and all that is left is to manually mount the lights . Volvo instructions were great nice an dclear even I could manage it . Happy days . Try doing that in a modern car , without the computer to enable the feature ( ala S80) and skinned knuckles due to no space what so ever ( Golf GTi) give me my 245 any day. Since I started working on my 245 I have to honestly say I never cursed, questioned the parentage of the designer or got into a bad state of mind as its been a real pleasure to work on. Points I like 1. very very comfortable. 2. high car making getting in and out easy. Also as I'am tall working on the car is also a damm site easier as well, no more back pains. 3. nice thick doors 4. good interior space 5. great engine bay space ( suits a novice , me ) 5. great load carrying ( haven't tested that yet but a dump visit is looming) 6. the ability to make it mine ( customise it as I see fit) 7. I feel very safe in it. well better go now I'am getting all emotional

Interesting thought
I'm sure you're aware of the current Volvo treasure hunt to win an XC90, whilst musing over it recently a thought struck me -
Volvo still have one brand new 240 Polar in the Gothenburg museum (also LHD like the XC90 prize), imagine for a moment you'd won the grand prize, and Volvo offered to swap it for the only new 240 in the world. Would you swap? |

As far as better built goes, if you push the front wing of my mates 307, it bends so much that your scared it will break! But i guess its crumble zones and all that.
