Default Mystery Foam Packing between Dash & Windscreen?

Does anyone else have this on their new MY2011 or older XC90s?

I’ve just noticed that there is a piece of foam packing wedged between the front windscreen and the dash board right where the VIN number plate is. It appears to be adhesively stuck in place.

Is this the official Volvo factory fix for the known dash rattle fault? If yes, this has to be the most unsightly fix I’ve ever seen as it now keeps catching my eye all the time an looks dead messy.

Yes, I have it on my MY10 also, I was thinking of removing it but will now wait until one of our experts states what it is for.

I have it on my 03 but it's not so visible as it dosn't project beyond the face of the dash and is virtually flush.

The enigma of the Mystery Foam Packing continues...

I may try and trim it back a little bit as it sticks out too far - oh matron!

Here's a photo. It's more visible in the photo than in reality as you can't actually see it in normal light. I had to feel for it to find it.

There’s an unprinted rectangular area in the front screen that allows you to see the VIN plate from outside the car. I think the foam just stops light coming in through this area and lighting up the dashboard (OK only slightly) when sat on the inside. By putting the foam in its basically less noticeable. That’s my thinking, not sure if its true though. Could be to stop the VIN plate rattling but I would thought there are better and cheaper solutions.
