Default gearbox oil

you dont state whether its manual or automatic, nevertheless, only volvo gearbox oil should be used, as its a special formula developed specificly for their gearboxes.

Default best oils

hiya there guys i should introduce myself, im rob goozee of the anglo american oil company, my knowledge of fuels and oils is purely proffesional and comes form years of working in motorsport, your boards technical report on oil was in fact compiled by my work collegue and close freind gavin scott, i appreciate your loyalty to your marque but please note volvo will sell you an oil they themselves make money from, all major manufacturers have tie ins with oil companies, its just good business, however the oils they recomend in car manuals and also in the garage itself are always subject to change, they are also governed by api spec, ie min emissions safer greener oils, longer service intervals, you will all remember this ........phasing out of leaded fuel, and now the introduction of bio fuels etc, what im getting at is they wont always recomend whats best for your car, i can help you though i hope firstly we need to establish the oil you use at the moment.....does it require gl4 or gl5 application,gl4 i would recomend our own gear oil synchro 80, its used by red bull f1, arden racing gp2, most of the gt series field where synchro rings dont require so much slip, gl5 i would recomend joe gibbs racing performance gear oil, very slippery very ligh and bullet proof, neither have to conform api standard so contain all the necessary additives to keep you motoring safely and efficiently........just an afterthought, correct oil in the correct application will increase bhp by lowering drag and as such will also increase fuel efficiency

The gearbox oil grade you need is SAE:1161520-7 for the 1.8GDI.

Received my second hand box today and Im in need of the same oil. Called Keith Price Volvo and they quoted me £16.34p per liter and the S40 needs 3.4 liters so that a grand total of £50 quid just for oil.

I asked if they would recommend a substitute and the mechanic said get hold of 75W90 semi-synthetic has its the same as what Volvo use.

So thats what Im getting

Regards.

PS,

Call Halfords and got a quote via my trade card and its £9.99 per liter retails and trade its £7.99.

Not a bad saving £8.00 for 4 liters of 75W90.

Regards again.

Just phoned my local Sparesworld and they quoted me trade £18.38 for 4 liters of 75W90.

Thats a saving again of £10.00.

So from Volvo at £50 quid all the way down to £19 quid.

Even better

Interesting post Robbie.

Could you advise me what oil/additive to use in my 2000 2litre auto box
(67000 miles) car.

I have had the car about 4 months, initially the auto change was quite jerky and I must admit it has improved slightly. but I feel the change should be a lot smoother and suspect, hopefully, that an additive/oil change would sort the problem.
