Default Strange noises

I have had a 2011 P3 V70 D5 205 6 sp auto (72k) for about a year and have noticed that it emits an odd sort of whingeing or moaning noise (no, not from the passenger seat!) at low speeds. It is not apparent at higher speeds but that could be because it is masked by other noise.
I have never had an auto before and am wondering if it has something to do with the gearbox. Or it is perhaps the turbo? It varies in pitch as the revs rise and fall. It is not loud or particularly intrusive (yet) but it is just odd and I'm sure it shouldn't be doing it in an otherwise refined quality vehicle. Or is it a case of "they all do that, sir". I have had whineing turbos before but it is not such a high pitch as that. As I said, more of a whinge.
I read the thread on replacing atf in the hope that it might give me a clue, but no. It has never been used for towing but it did spend it's life before my ownership in the London area and therefore could have been in stop/start traffic a lot. Could it be a sign that the fluid needs changing?
The gearbox works as it should otherwise as far as I know. Changes gear smoothly, kicks down etc.
Sorry it's a bit of a long winded post but any thoughts would be welcome.

Does the whine vary with engine speed or road speed? If you are parked and rev the engine, does the whine vary if at all?

It varies with engine speed. It is most apparent at low revs (1200- 1500) at low road speeds as in local urban driving. The noise rises and falls with the revs. Once you get beyond low speeds it disappears or is masked. I have tried just reving the engine in neutral and there is a whine which again disappears with higher revs as engine noise intrudes. I think it is perhaps the same noise that translates into a rising and falling whinge as the revs change in slow motoring. I have not tried running with the aircon switched off to see if that affects or stops it.

Does you power steering make a noise when you turn at slow speed?? I have a similar noise, which seems to be caused by an ingress of air into the feeder pipe / PS fluid reservoir. Currently being fixed (I hope).

Could it be the air con pump ? These can make a shinning noise that get more noticeable if the gas is low. As your car is a few years old it might be worth getting it regassed. Dont use one of the diy top up culindersbut get it regassed with new lube at a propper air con specialst. We had a similar problem with a different make of car some years ago and the main dealer quoted over a £1k to fit new un needed pump . local ac secialist did job for £50 and car was super quiet after that with ice cold ac.

I have yet to test it with aircon off as it's in the body shop at present. Soon as I get it back I will check. Could be aircon related thanks.

I had exactly the same issue. The strange sound changes with the revs and happened only on low RPM as you said. Once I turned off the AC the noise 100% disappeared. Based on my research it caused by low gas level or the failure of the compressor. Basically it's a common issue, you can find many volvo videos in YT with the same problem.

I will refill the gas on the next spring since it's the original in it.
