Default Servicing - xc90

Ideally I will get my 4 year Volvo services at a dealer. But Volvo Reading is asking for 380 (with 10% off) for a minor service. This seems lot. Will I miss on s/w upgrades if I take it to a independent garage? Is there a Volvo specialist in the Reading - Oxford area? Can I do a minor service at an independent and then next major service at main dealer to get necessary s/w upgrades? With all these prices sky rocketing I do need to be mindful but I don’t want to damage the car either. It’s a 2017 plate D5 with 85k on clock. Thanks

You should be able to do the same updates ota that they will install for you,

As for servicing a 4 year old car as long as good quality parts are used and the garage has a good rep it's the way to go tbh,

Mine when she hits service time is a 50/50 for me, do I keep the book up to date or fully service it for little more than a ton myself and know it's been fully done right,

You want either gen Volvo filters or Mann aftermarket ones, these are the best you can get as they are the same only one doesn't say Volvo on it, Euro Car Parts is always the best place to get them from, make sure you check the oil spec/grade as well or you risk getting what they've got put in there,

If you plan to px it in the next 3 years I'd bite the bullet and get it done by Volvo to get the stamp, it could add quite a bit of value to what you get offered for it, having said that shop around as prices do vary and I'd have thought the correct price for a small service would be £250 max,

It needs checking but if you do go Volvo I think you get a years roadside and a years My Volvo sub chucked in as well.

Software updates for less recent cars require access to Volvo's VIDA system. My understanding is that some independent garages have access to VIDA and some do not (access to VIDA carries a cost) so check with them if you wish to receive the software updates. You could get a minor service at an independent (without software updates) then use a Volvo dealer for the next service where you would receive the software updates.

I've had three Volvos and do 25k a year so they're out of warranty at under 3 years.

I've always had the first service done by Volvo and after that used either a Volvo specialist or an independent.

When I've traded them back in at 90k miles, the price has been based on them having full service history and they've been retailed as "Select" cars on the forecourt DESPITE not having Volvo stamps in the book - just a stamp from whatever garage has done the work.

A car is a car, any good mechanic can service it. My wife has a Maserati that we have serviced at a very good local garage, on that the service is 20% of the Maserati dealer. Having recently had it valued, the prices are based on it having a full service history NOT a full main dealer service history - so I would say it's not actually that true that it makes a significant difference based on both our experiences.

It helps up to a certain age, right now it's 8 but when normality returns it'll be back to 5, I actually think dealers hate it when you have the history as it's one less chisel available to them,

So correct about the history and then being retailed as if they had one, hire & reward, driving school stains seem to evaporate once a garage owns the car.

I can recommend ACC UK who are not far off from CIVC. Had my V60 serviced and maintained there, very reasonable costs compared to main dealer and excellent service.
