Oh No, an Unwanted Groove!
I was driving the 360 on the A 303 today when the steering suddenly felt heavy. I pulled over and found I had a flat front r/h side tyre. When I took the tyre off I found that the inside of the tyre was completely worn down to the fabric. The spring strut had collapsed and a sharp edge had dug into the tyre creating a groove right round the tyre puncturing it - good job this happened when I was driving in a straight line! The car was recovered. A big thanks to Foggy James who managed to source me a strut in just a few seconds when I phoned him, thanks also to Pete Farrell.

Hi Tim, yep, you're right, it's a known issue! I found this out yesterday after speaking to people as there are a few 300s that have suffered the same fate! A big thanks to James!

I have had a spring break on the old 265 and the effect was the same, but a bit more rapid.

Yeah, it's fairly common - I'm thankful that my car had new strut's two years ago The same thing happened fairly recently on my Dad's Skoda Felicia, although in comparison it was still perfectly driveable and didn't ruin the tyre!

I had a strut collapse on my first 340 (the panther) when i hit a pot hole, noticed it sraight away, sounded like I'd ran over someone small! I was only a little way down the road from the house, so it wasn't catastrophic, twas scary though! |

Yup. For what it's worth, it happened on one of mine too.

It is quite common on 300 and 200's. 200's do seem to get away with not killing the ture quite so quickly though.
I have also seen the odd 7 suffer from the same problem. It is caused simply by trapped mud arond the base of the spring. Make sure when you clean your car to give this area a good going over. Also Ian be aware the other side is likely to be next - give it 6 months. |

Hi, thanks for the advice. Went up to Pete Farrell's last week and bought both left and right hand side spring struts. I'll get the other side checked asp.
