Modern diesel transplant into my 81 2.4 d auto
Hi guys, im Dave, expat living in Spain, i have my old 240 diesel back in tbe garage after breaking its engine. Finding a replacement engine for car is proving dificult( near impossible ) , so i had a brain wave( many of us suffer from these attacks so ive heard ) and thought about putting a modern(ish) diesel from a newer volvo into it. Obvious Qs!!
1. Has it ever been done? 2. If so, which engine and from which volvo?? 3. Would it be viable?? I really dont want to send her to the knackers yard as she is such a rare beast over here, full leather, sunroof, GLE trim etc. If i could make a go of this, i would want to stick something in which would have a bit more grump than original, which has 82 hp, im thinking more along the lines of 150hp or so. Thankyou in advance for taking the time to read this and i look forward to your advice/ opinions etc. cheers lads |

I know it's not the same project result but if you check out Antz' 240 T5 thread you will see that a newer "whiteblock" Volvo engine swap is quite involved.
Might be worth trying to locate another diesel block, possibly from another rwd Volvo ie a 940. Dan

It's not economicaly viable. A D5 diesel out of a V70 or D5 needs the input from the car's canbus, you can't just take the engine and electonics out of the donor cat and shove them into the 240 as the electronics look for input from things like the ignition key, alarm modules, ABS module etc. Without all the relevant signals it won't run.
There are ways around it, the D5 can be run with Volvo Penta electronics intended for boat use, and I believe it'll bolt to an M90 gearbox, but there is no cheap way of doing it. It'll make a good project but it's technically involved and it'll cost more than buying an S60, V70 or S80. |

Most of the later Volvo stuff is a bit ECU orientated seems a shame to scrap one just because the engine has had it! |

I'd thought about this, but not much more, and I fancied the idea of a 2.5lt BMW M51 engine in a 240, fit the mechanical injection pump from the earlier M21 engine to get rid of the electronics.
It would be a load of work though. |

Yes the D5 conversion can be done. The D24 would be easier but the D5 would be amazing.

Its cracked the block, no good at all. Ive thought about the easy route, which would be the 740 turbo diesel unit, but here in Spain, i would have to get it approved by an mot station anywise, so if im going to end up paying money for a project( putting a turbo in a non turbo car is considered a project and has to be approved, strict mot laws erc) i want something decent and DIFFERENT!! I just want her to stand out, and have something no one else has. From what i read on here, my biggest problem is gona be the electronics, sensors etc. ive read about guys in sweden who can re-map the module so it doesnt need all of the sensors connected etc. i am not gonna give up, so i shall keep on investigating. Cheers lads
