480 Cutting out
Hey, having problems with my 480, keeps cutting out, especially after being on a longish journey, then when you start it again it just cuts out again and again.
Totally cut out the other day and this 'mechanic' stopped and 'upped the revs' to 2000 which got me home. now after jump starting it it is doing the same. The revs don't sit 'idle' either. Should i take the revs back down again? Any ideas? |

On my 480 the problem was caused by a faulty flywheel sensor - duly replaced it has been fine ever since.
At the risk of being laughed at, check/replace the spark plugs - I have had 3 sets fail on me in the 180K it has done - again similar symtpoms. Hope this helps. Chris |

Firstly, what model is your 480? Does it have the battery gauge that sits under the radio? If it does, when the car is running, where does the needle sit? Half to 3 quarters of the way shows a good charge. It might be that whilst your car is switched off and the battery isn't being charged, the actual battery may be losing it's charge. Is it a sealed battery or is it one you can top up? If it is one you can top-up, check that the cells are covered with distilled water-if not, top up, if they are, don't!
Also, check the positive connection on the battery and follow the wire all the way to the alternator. This wire has a number of connections on encased in semi white/transparent plastics. Check all these and make sure all are connected and have clean contacts etc. How did the mechanic adjust the revs? Was it with the idle screw by the throttle cable? If so, adjust that until your revs hit the 900 mark again-this way you can get a more accurate idea with the battery gauge... You can register on this forum which is dedicated to 480 ownership and the joys of all it's problems-everyone is very helpful and friendly. 480 Europe Website. I'm not trying to push you away from here though! (I've had alot of help from people from all forums here in the past). You could also try this fault code reader. Its the 480's way of letting you know it's ill and what the problem is. Very handy to know...Diagnostic Unit I'd try all the simple things first before you spend money on expensive parts or labour!
