Default Low Engine Oil Warning Message

Does anybody know whether there is a fault code for low engine oil. I do a lot of motorway mileage in my P2 V70 T5 and must burn a some oil as i am hacking up and down the motorway. A code like this could help.

There is a code for low oil *pressure* but if you get that you're really in the poo. Low oil level would require a dedicated sensor but there isn't one on the P2.

Just check the oil every couple of times you fill the tank until you get a handle on how much the car uses, then adjust it as appropriate from there.

I check the oil about once a month and always before a long journey, never had a problem.

Cheers,
John

I belive, some time ago, there was a replacement dipstick on the market which had a capacitance probe level indicator built into it. Not sure how accurate it was, but it would warn of low levels.
Might be worth investigating if it, or something similar, is still available.

S60/V70/S80 all R models and 2005 onwards cars have an oil level sensor ..
but no substitute for dipping it yourself regularly ....

I stand corrected, thanks Clan, useful to know about the 2005MY onwards sensor.

Cheers,

Wow, yes you do! Until you've got a handle on it I'd definately dip the oil every time you fill up just to be on the safe side, three or four tanks should be enough for you to be happy about how much oil she's using.

Cheers,
John

I do about 1500 miles a week in my 215,000 mile P2 V70 T5, I only need to top up a tiny ammount once a month, if that. So really a weekly check is more than suficient. unless youre engine is knackered.

Thanks folks, i did check the oil before my run to chard and then preston and was pleasently surprised to find that the oil level was not that far below where it should be and thats after 3000 hard miles following a recent service/oil change, so i just added a little bit of oil to bring it up to the right level. I will check it again tomorrow. So i dont think the car is using oil excessively, not like my old 2001 Vectra SRI that showed low oil messages after 1500 miles. I have just moved to the hangleton area of Hove not far from the grenedea pub (check the spelling) just renting at the moment to see the lay of the land.
