Default 2.0D DPF regeneration surprise

Conventional wisdom holds that regeneration takes place once the car is up to operating temperature, moderate-high speed etc

Today the outside temperature is about 2 celsius. I left home, travelled 1 mile to pay the newspaper bill and a further 2 miles to Sainsburys. I returned home from Sainsburys including a stop at B&Q about 1 mile from home. Max speed at any time was about 35mph and engine revs barely exceeded 2000 rpm.

When I got out of the car on the drive there was the unmistakable smell of a regeneration having started plus the engine cooling fan running.

I was amazed because of the driving I'd done today before the regeneration.

Naturally I then reversed out of the drive and took the car for a quick motorway jaunt (fortunately I live 1 mile away from the M62) until the regeneration was complete.

Ironically, I've driven almost exclusively on motorways for about the past fortnight but the car waited until this morning to regenerate the DPF!

I'm guessing that the Peugeot sourced DPF system with additive means that regeneration can take place at much lower speeds/temperatures than the Volvo based system on the 2.4 diesel engines.

typically the additive lowers the regen temps by 200 degrees , the peugeot ones work on differential pressure across the DPF aswell , so the ecu may even have forced a regen if the back pressure was getting too high .
