If you are changing both headlamps, you would be aswell to convert to the twin headlamp units from the Phase 2 models It will require a bit of rewiring, but they work much better. There should be a guide somewhere on here but i can't find it at the moment !

I don't think there are any Volvo parts catalogues on-line unless you are a dealer ...

I faffed about trying to repair the headlights in my p1, then when I couldn't do it (I don't think these repair parts were available then) I ordered 2 new p2 units off eBay, the wiring adaptation is very simple, requiring only either 3 or 4 short pieces of wire per side and some spade connectors, that swap was the single best modification I ever did to that car, the difference is night and day, literally, with p1 candle headlights there were times where I didn't think they were even on they were that bad, double bulb P2 units and some aftermarket bulbs ( I chose either Philips crystal vision or Xtreme vision, can't remember which) amazing, simply amazing.
EDIT: Here's the thread I made about it at the time, some useful info in here https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=249618

Thanks Clarky1984 after looking at upgrades they are all a bit LED running light boy racerish styles but I would like to keep the 1997 S40 as close to original so the idea to swap them out from ph1 to ph2 as suggested by yourself and other forum members sounds the way forward....regards johnniec63
