Slow Cranking V70 D5 2006
Hi my V70 D5 turns over very slowly, sometimes not too bad other days it struggles to fire into life.
I've checked the battery all OK there. Wondering if the starter motor needs replacing, or are there other reasons for variable but slow craning speeds? Many thanks, Richard. |

"I've checked the battery all OK there".
Apologies for questioning. In what way have you checked ? If the battery has any age to it, it would likely make sense to change it anyway at this time of year. If only as a process of elimination before diving into starter motor etc. Get a correct spec' main dealer Volvo one, good for circa 10 years under normal circumstances. Unlikely to be much dearer than elsewhere. You may of course already have done this, in which case dive in deeper. |

if that is healthy ie above 12v then do the same across the starter terminal and it's body.

My 2005 XC70 D5 185 did this from when I bought it in 2017 for 4-5 years with virtually no change - so I assumed battery was probably ok (or it probably would have got worse). It always turned over slowly, it always turned over more times than felt right before it started, but it always started - so I didn't worry too much.
Then it suddenly got worse and was obviously a battery problem. I replaced the battery a few months ago and now it turns over and starts like a good'un. |

Thanks for advice ... I'll have a look at it on the car.
I did check the battery with a load tester when I had it off the car, after a charge. But real life I guess is the correct test when its turning the engine. Also have swapped it out with a different battery which I also believe to be OK. However, a new one may well be worth getting to at least eliminate that and it'll be good for the winter months ahead. Many thanks, Rich. |
