2.3 T5 V70 Lambda change exhaust off ?
I have to change the front Lambda sensor due to various error codes relating to the heater circuit, I mistakenly fitted after market and the EML came on before so long, a garage fitted it.
It is an exhaust off job on this car, you can't get the Lambda tool on the sensor so you have to drop the exhaust. A job I haven't done before. Doing it on axle stands, can anyone give me any experienced tips? Thanks. |

How long ago was the exhaust off? I assume the incorrect O2 sensor was fitted with the exhaust off.
What engine do you have? The upstream O2 sensor has been in plain sight on all 3 of my 5 cylinder engines. If you don't go Volvo, get Denso O2 sensors as Denso makes 'em for Volvo. As far a tips go re exhaust removal: The shops have stands/jacks which are high enough to use while a car is on a lift. My tip would be to loosen what you can to swing the system down enough to reach your work. Plan ahead for replacement rubber hangers as some will break with age. Do get the cheap "pulling tool" which helps hook/unhook 'em. If your flex joint (don't know the proper name nor part number) is unravelling try to stress it as little as possible. If you're close to it, scope out the tools you'll need when the time comes. When I sold my 2002 I left installed a $138 hitch as I didn't want to flex the aged joint so close to time-of-sale. You have to drop the exhaust from the rear and unhook the hangers to get the hitch into position. That's really all my experience with "auspuff" (German for exhaust-my favorite German word). |

Hi thanks, they took the exhaust off about 2 years ago when they put this aftermarket sensor on at my request, my mistake. I have a new Bosch one to fit.
It looks a heavy job for one man on axle stands?? |

The easiest way I found was to undo the two nuts where the front pipe join the intermediate pipe, the rest of the exhaust should stay in place. I seem to remember a couple of exhaust rubbers to pull off and then the joys of the three nuts onto the turbo. I think the later 2.4 T5 uses allen bolts and the earlier 2.3 M8 nuts.
Have you tried a crows foot spanner yet? https://www.amazon.co.uk/Socket-Oxyg...008C7PP6M/?tag I would be very surprised if Volvo required the front pipe to be dropped to change the sensor. |

I have what looks like the larger of the two Lambda sensor sockets but the access is so tight I cannot get a rachet or anything onto it. The garage told me at the time they'd had to take the exhaust off which surprised me.
But you are right it is surprising Volvo did not just use a tool for this, it makes me wonder if the flatter of the two sockets shown on the Amazon link might fit. I think I'll go and ask Volvo. Useful comments on where to separate the exhaust thanks. |

The thinner (slender) the better for O2 sensor sockets.
Years ago my sister's car threw a P0138 code....my first code ever.! It was for the upstream O2S on her Jeep XJ. I told her over the phone to buy a sensor and socket as I didn't own one (obviously). I hung up the phone and had misgivings. I had authorized a female to tool shop. Sure enough, Sis came over with the biggest, chunkiest, most gargantuan, least-in-demand example ever built. A thin one has to be made of better material to resist flexing under use so beware..........a good one will be more expensive. |

Is there no room to just use a open ended spanner, that's how I got mine out. you've only got to crack it loose then just unplug it and twizzling the cable would probably unwind it. wouldn't do that with the new one though obvs
Admittedly no turbo so a lot easier for access, but still it was a bit awkward having to reach down the back of the engine |

you defintely dont need to remove exhaust to change either of them

Well my garage insisted you do on the 2.3 T5 V70 and as I said my lambda socket does not allow enough room for the rachet. You have 2.4's and tbey might be different.
The non turbo is different. |
