Why is my car creaking and groaning?
Hi All. Have a 2004 V40 estate.Broke both nearside coil springs so had my local garage fit new springs all round.Ever since the car has been moaning and creaking, mainly from the front both near side and off side but also from the rear where it is also knocking a little.Took it back but the mechanic could,t find anything wrong. All the bushes are ok and no play in the suspension at all.Car done 70000 miles.
Any suggestions please. Thank you. |

It has arthritis
Creaking is normally due to rubber joints the springs rest on being disturbed & working in a new location . Personally when i replace springs I use either red rubber grease or silicone plumbers grease as neither will damge the rubber ( obvious , but often over looked ) thinly smeared on rubber to metal faces , it also allows the ruber to relocate naturally where it wants too . As for knocking , check for any cables that could be hitting & leaving clean marks

Yes of course Arthritis I should have realised that from my own symptoms.
Will check out the rubber cushions, wouldn,t be surprised if he didn,t replace them at all. When he brought it back from a test drive he had the radio on full blast and then said he couldn,t hear anything."PARDON"I shouted at the top of my voice. He repeated he couldn,t hear anything. He didn't get the inference. Thanks. |

Genuine Volvo front springs have a rubber sleeve glued to the bottom spring coil, to act as a cushion between spring and bottom mount. I suspect these have not been fitted to the new springs. The rubber sleeves are available from Volvo as a separate item - a couple of quid a throw if I remember correctly. This could account for the front end creaking and groaning. Not sure of the rear set up - could be a similar scenario.
Were the front top mounts replaced as well, as this could give rise to groans if not.

Hi again. Just thinking,I am a member of the BMW Roadster forum. There is a website called Real OEM on which you can find exploded views of all aspects of BMW cars.
Is there anything similar for the Volvo? |
