Default A long shot!

In the hope that you good people can give me a shortlist of solutions, here is my problem.

I have a rather unique Land rover with a D24T sourced from a 740TD, by a friend who emigrated (doh!). The engine uses all the ancilliaries from the Volvo; there's nothing extra or weird.

Today it was running fine and suddenly stopped whilst manoeuvring. It was as if I'd knocked the key- that was my first thought.

Won't start. Has fuel (and anyway if it was fuel starvation it wouldn't have stopped so suddenly). When cranking, vapour from exhaust is not fuel- or carbon- smelly; when this motor cranks normally it is pretty black. As an experiment, a tiny half second squirt of easy-start made the engine fire for a second. So it's mechanically sound.

I am not a diesel expert. A petrol vehicle wouldn't worry me much in these circumstances. Any ideas gents?

The blind leading the blind.
But as a start you will want to make sure that diesel is getting to the injectors by loosening a couple of the connectors. Need to be careful doing this as the metal pipes are easily mangled. That will tell you if the pump is working, which one might suspect is the cause of your trouble. If fuel does not dribble out, it is possible to check if the problem is due to non pick up by rigging a jerry can on the roof. There is some seal down there that needs to be replaced if doing this works, I think this happened to craig8661, so have a look through his posts using the advanced search feature.
