1995 850 T5 - What's causing this?
Hi All,
I have wound up being given a 1995 Volvo 850 T5 SE Estate. apart from the usual minor niggles (leaky heater matrix, needing a really good clean and a service, explansion tank and PCV job) there is another very annoying issue which I was hoping someone on here could help with. At low speeds, for example creeping along in traffic with the car in 1st gear, engine just idling (no throttle or breaks applied) I often get a noise which sounds like a valve operating very quickly. If this is happening and I press the brakes (even with the most gentle touch), the car stops very suddenly with a strange grauncing kind of noise. Not quite a grinding, but it's more towards a grind than a squeak. The brake pads and calipers are all fine, so it does not seem to be worn pads grinding on disc. The ABS light doesn't come on (although the bulb does function when you first turn the car on) and there is no TRACS system fitted. As a bit of background, I helped source this car for the previous owner about ten years ago and as he was away to sell it, he offered it to me. My intention is do a 'working restoration' so not concours, but mechanically very good and usable for holidays etc, maybe even commuting, it can't drink anymore fuel than my Landrover. I would be very greatful to anyone who has experienced a similar issue with these cars before, if they could point me in the right direction. Thanks Jon |

Hi,
Don't think it's the self test - feels more like something is on the verge of being broken. What are the symptoms of a failing driveshaft? I ask as apparently this noise only used to happen when you had the wheel turned but has since started doing it a lot more often. Cheers Jon |

You need to check all your pads by taking them out and seeing if they have delaminated. Don't just look at them , take them out and try to detatch them and see if they are separating. They can chop about in the calipers giving pretty bad noises and jam causing damage to the disc as I found out.

Hi,
Had a good check of the pads, they seem fine. Speaking to the P.O he was saying the pads were changed about a month ago but it was doing the same thing with the old pads as well. Cheers Jon |

What about the brake shoes as opposed to the pads

Indeed, these are located under the rear brake disks - remove the rear wheels (jacking up/securing the car first of course), remove the rear pads and calliper from the rear disc.
Move the disc so that the inspection hole is roughly at the 11o'clock position (for offside) or 1 o'clock (for nearside) - you should see the handbrake adjuster (a toothed cylindrical object) - pop a screwdriver in and turn these teeth round to loosen off the handbrake. Once done enough, remove teh small torx guiding screw (if you have any!) and the rear disk can be removed. You can then look at your handbrake shoes and check them as above.

Wow, I hadn't realised it was sos long ago since I posted this...
Having spent a bit more time on Google (and done a lot of other work to the car) I am thinking that the problem seems similar to the one very briefly described at http://www.volvoclub.org.uk/850_brakes.shtml . Has anyone carried out this modification and is there a 'how to' anywhere? The car is OBD1 with the (frankly huge) silver ABS control unit in a vertical position on the left hand inner wing. I know the car had been doing this for a good while before I came to own it. Cheers Jon |

Odd noise from brakes and engine compartment
Hi Jon, I have a 93 8504 se. It did exactly the same but also gave me full on brake pedal pulse. The ABS ECU (big shiny thing) rarely goes wrong but the ABS pump below this does and makes that rapid tapping sound. all this happened on mine with no ABS light or fault codes. Repaced pump and checked and replaced sensors back and front to be safe.
Hopefully yours is not this but its a possible if you dont get any joy with the hand brake pads. Sam |
